Madsall, Robert

King
Nature of request
[The right edge of this petition is damaged.]Robert Madsall requests remedy against John Skakell regarding a long-running dispute following Skakell's discovery of a chest containing 500 marks, which should have been handed to the king as of his right. Various commissions and letters have been issued and ignored, and Beauchamp summoned the petitioner before the seneschal of the Marshalsea when the king visited Hull, but little has been done, the bailiffs dare not carry out their orders for fear of death, and Skakell, with the help of others including Veel and Ravene, have attacked Madsall and imprisoned him.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be sent to the Chancery, and summon the people and let right be done.

Note
Dated on the guard to 1383-4, with reference to commissions issued in relation to this case on 5 February 1383 and 16 November 1384. However, the letter with which the petition was enclosed, ordering the council to act upon the complaint, was dated at Drayton Basset on 26 June. No year is given, but Richard II's itinerary clearly shows that this was 1387 (N. Saul, Richard II (New Haven, 1997), p.471). Presumably the petition was presented shortly before that date, and formed a rather later part of the process.
