Reference
SC 8/181/9012
Date
[c. 1395-c. 1427]
Description
Petitioners
Joan Cusac (Cusak, Cusack), wife of Geoffrey Cusac.
Name(s)
Cusac (Cusak, Cusack), Joan
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Joan Cusac states that although an inquisition held before the Treasurer and Sturmy showed that her husband Geoffrey was the son and heir of Thomas Cusac, Shugley and Curles have claimed that Geoffrey was illegitimate, ousted him from his lands and imprisoned him without trial in Trim castle. She requests that the king order his lieutenant to summon Geoffrey before the king in England, so that right can be done, as his captors are so powerful that no justice can be had without the king's order.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Ireland
Drogheda, [Ireland]
Trim, [County Meath, Ireland].
People mentioned
Geoffrey Cusac (Cusak, Cusack), husband of the petitioner
Thomas Cusac (Cusak, Cusack), father of Geoffrey Cusac
Treasurer of Ireland
William Sturmy, justice
John Shugley
Robert Curles.
Note
Dated by Connolly to temp. Henry IV. This is probably correct, but a wider range would seem possible. Sturmey was appointed as justice by Richard II in 1395 (and is probably the man of that name who died in 1427), while Joan Cusack died 1441.
