Description
Petitioners
William Tirwhit (Tyrwhitt), knight, former sheriff of Yorkshire.
Name(s)
Tirwhit (Tyrwhitt), William
Addressees
King.
Occupation
sheriff of Yorkshire
Nature of request
William Tirwhit, late sheriff of Yorkshire, asks that he be pardoned £140 from his account as sheriff. His predecessors have traditionally been pardoned £80 from their account, but, along with all the usual expenses and burdens, he has had to bear the cost of transporting soldiers to Scotland, and collecting the recent subsidy.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] Delivered by the Duke of Gloucester, 12 February.
Places mentioned
Yorkshire
Scotland.
People mentioned
[Humphrey of Lancaster], Duke of Gloucester.
Note
William Tirwhit served as sheriff of Yorkshire in 1435-6, and the date of 12 February noted on the face presumably refers to 1437, during the Hilary parliament of that year and when Tirwhit's account was presumably being rendered. The subsidy concerned was that granted in December 1435, which, unlike standard fifteenths and tenths, was administered by the sheriff, and an array had been called in the north in June 1436 (Bain, Cal. Docs. Scot., IV, no.1095).
