Reference
SC 8/181/9004
Date
[c. 1397]
Description
Petitioners
Elizabeth Gorges, widow of Bartholomew Gorges.
Name(s)
Gorges, Elizabeth
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Elizabeth Gorges requests that the king order the chancellor to hold an investigation and do right to her concerning the manor of Wraxall. She states that her husband held the manor in chief, but on his death the escheator of Somerset allowed Thomas Gorges to take possession instead of taking it into the king's hands for Bartholomew's daughters. Thomas has despoiled the manor of goods worth £40, and refuses to allow Elizabeth her dower.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Wraxall, [Somerset]
Somerset.
People mentioned
Bartholomew Gorges, late husband of the petitioner
Thomas Gorges, brother of Bartholomew Gorges
Escheator of Somerset.
Note
Bartholomew Gorges died on 21 June 1396. Writs were issued on 19 August 1396 (CIPM, vol. XVII, nos.786-9), and the inquisitions, held in September 1396, all found that Thomas was the heir to Bartholomew's property, as two fines (also ordered to be certified in September 1396) showed that it was to descend to his male heirs. A writ to assign dower to Elizabeth was issued on 28 September 1396, and further orders appointing commissioners to apportion dower were issued on 6 June 1397, 30 October 1397 and 4 May 1398. The near-duplicate of this petition at SC 8/182/9079 appears to have resulted in the latter of these commissions, and thus it appears likely that this petition relates to one of the other two, or at least to this same period.
