[This petition is damaged and the right edge is now missing.]The Abbot and convent of Westminster state that they incur large costs during each vacancy, such as the expenses of sending the abbot-elect or his proctors to the Pope in Rome, first fruits and other costs, which are particularly damaging since the temporalities of the house are taken into the king's hands during these periods. They therefore request licence to treat with the Pope concerning the payment of an annual sum instead of these first fruits.
