Date
[c. 1333]
Description
Petitioners
Merchants of London and Bristol; mariners of Dover.
Addressees
King [of France].
Nature of request
The merchants and mariners appear to be making a complaint to the King of France about restrictions on trading between northern France and England, and the seizure of their ships and goods in French ports. However, the petition is badly damaged; much of the right side is damaged or illegible, and the exact sense is difficult to reconstruct.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
London
Bristol
Dover, [Kent]
Wissant, [Artois, France]
Calais, [France].
People mentioned
[Philip VI, King of France]
Countess of Boulogne
Philip [III], King of France
Edward [I], King of England
[Edward III], King of England.
Note
Dated on the guard to c.1333, with reference to SC 8/273/13609, a copy of another petition and other related documents on the same matter. That petition was evidently addressed to the King of France, Philip VI, since his response is also included on that document. Many of the phrases used in that petition are also used here, such as the address to 'your royal majesty' rather than 'our lord the king', and the same familial descriptions, and although much of this petition is damaged or illegible, it is clearly very similar to that copy, and would also seem to have been addressed to the King of France.
