Reference
SC 8/180/8998
Date
[? 1388]
Description
Petitioners
John de Nottingham, chaplain.
Name(s)
de Nottingham, John
Addressees
King.
Occupation
chaplain
Nature of request
The petitioner requests that, should a vacancy occur while the temporalities of the Archbishopric of York are in the king's hands, that he be appointed to a prebend in the collegiate church of Ripon.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Ripon, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
York diocese.
People mentioned
The Pope
Archbishop of York.
Note
Unfortunately the first name of the petitioner is now missing. A John de Nottingham was confirmed in three ecclesiastical offices (including one in Ripon) in 1392, and is presumably the both the petitioner and the man later appointed to prebends in York minster (1408 and 1409), archdeacon of Nottingham (1397-1415) and Treasurer of York (1415-18). A note on the guard suggests a date of 1388, with reference to the temporalities of the archbishop being in the king's hands. Such vacancies occurred between April and September 1388, from September 1396 to March 1397, between January and June 1398, and again in 1405, 1406 and 1407, but since he styles himself chaplain, the petition presumably dates to the early part of his career, and thus 1388 appears most likely.
