Nature of request
[The right side of this petition is badly faded, and hence part of the text is missing]The petitioners request that the king seize the priory of Stoke by Clare and all its appurtenances into his hands. They state that the priory, one of those subject to Bec-Hellouin, was in their hands as proctors during the schism, and following the resignation [as keeper] of William de Sancto Vedasto, Prior of Ogbourne, Salisbury was appointed as the new Prior. However, William George altered the letters of presentment, took up the post and has committed various other offences.

Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1391, with reference to the appointment of the petitioners to exercise the rights normally held by Bec-Hellouin in England during the schism (CPR 1388-92, p.509). However, VCH Suffolk, vol. II, using information from the bishop's registers, notes that George was both appointed and replaced in 1396 (apparently being succeeded by Estrepeny), suggesting that the petition also dates to that year. The final part of the petition also mentions the 1000 mark fine payable to Westminster Abbey, levied when the priory was granted denizen status in 1395 (CPR 1391-6, p.640; Monasticon Anglicanum, VI, p.1415).
