Date
[1388-1399]
Description
Petitioners
John Blaunchard, chaplain.
Name(s)
Blaunchard, John
Addressees
King.
Occupation
chaplain
Nature of request
John Blaunchard, once parson of Hauxwell, states that he made a pronouncement with Crakall, then parson of Gosforth (both of the jurisdiction of Charleton, then Archdeacon of Richmond), by which he was instituted to the church of Gosforth. He held this for a long time until Whitryg, with the connivance of Clerk and others, purchased a presentment from the king, directed to Waltham, then archdeacon, by which he was ousted from the church. He therefore requests that Whitryg be summoned to the Chancery to explain the situation, and that right be done to him.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] Sheriff of Cumberland.
Places mentioned
Haukeswell (Hauxwell), [North Riding of Yorkshire
Richmond archdeaconry
Gosforth, [Cumberland]
Kirkby Kendal (Kendal), [Cumberland].
People mentioned
Humphrey de Charleton (Cherleton), former Archdeacon of Richmond
William Crakall, parson of Gosforth
Thomas Whitryg (Whitrigg), parochial chaplain of Gosforth
Thomas Clerk of Kendal
John de Waltham, Archdeacon of Richmond.
Note
Humphrey de Cherleton and John de Waltham, both described as former Archdeacons of Richmond, held that office in 1359-83 and 1385-8 respectively. Given that the monarch addressed appears to be the same one who issued the presentment to Waltham (i.e. Richard II), the petition presumably dates to some point between 1388 and Richard's deposition.
