Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/180/8986
Date
[c. 1413-c. 1422]
Description
Petitioners
Alan Edenham.
Name(s)
Edenham, Alan
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Scalby Hay, [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Pickering Forest, [North Riding of Yorkshire].
Nature of request
Alan Edenham requests the confirmation of grants made to him by the king's father on 5 June in his first year, under the seal of the Duchy of Lancaster, of the office of forester of the wood of Scalby Hay in the Forest of Pickering, and six marks annually from that forest. He claims that he has served the king, his father and his grandfather for over 40 years.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Note
Dated on the guard to either c. 1413 or c. 1422, with reference to the petitioner's service to the king, his father and his grandfather. The handwriting would certainly suggest one of the Lancastrian monarchs. The petitioner's reference to over 40 years service (thus dating back to the 1370s or 1380s) would suggest that he began in the service of John of Gaunt as Duke of Lancaster, and hence date the petition to 1413, but Henry IV was born in 1367, and the petitioner may have served Henry during his father's lifetime. Whichever monarch is concerned, the petition would almost certainly date to the early part of the reign.
