Although this document is now practically illegible, notes on the guard refer to a series of letters from 1295-6 relating to the case, from which some of the detail may be inferred. It would seem that this incident formed part of Edward I's wider goal of imposing his own authority over Scotland and undermining that of John Balliol, then King of Scotland.
