Nature of request
[Petition in 3 parts].Requests to the end of preventing the perils apparent to England in the confederations lately made by the enemies of the nation against the king's immediate ancestors, and to put the enemies in a position to cease their malice and make restitution to the king and his subjects.1. They request that the chancellor be commanded to make commissions and other letters to his admirals and other ministers to keep their liberties and customs as well as can be found to have been ordained in the time of the king's grandfather with all the amendments that can be ordained by the king's council.2. They request that letters be made sufficient for the keeping of the ordinances and agreements made between the masters and mariners of the maritime ports of England and of other ports of lands and isles annexed to the English crown of the one part, and the masters and mariners of the ports of other lordships of the king's grandfather's alliance, namely Spain and Flanders of the other part to endure forever, and to proclaim the ordinances and agreements in the manner that they were proclaimed in 1296.3. They request that similar alliances and agreements are made with the new allies of Hainault and elsewhere, and that they be proclaimed.

The petition dates to? c. 1338 on the basis of the dating given in the guard note. The petition is clearly in the earlier period of the reign of Edward III as the second request refers to the alliances made by the king's grandfather in 1296.
