SC 8/178/8861
Date
[? c. 1315]
Description
Petitioners
John de Foleburne (Fulbourn).
Name(s)
de Foleburne (Fulbourn), John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Foleburne requests that the king will command his will so that he is able to receive his armour and harness as he left them in the wardrobe of Cretinge at Bourg when he was ordered by Breotayne to reside at Rions, and after Cretinge's death of wounds received at Podensac, Tybotot, Cretinge's chief executor, placed his armour and harness in the custody of Thornton who came into England and also died and Foleburne is unable to recover his armour and harness.1)
Nature of endorsement
He should sue by writ in Chancery to . . . of the chattels to the value.2) This petition should be delivered to Adam de Osgodby.
Places mentioned
Bourg, [Guyenne, France]
Rions, [Guyenne, France]
Podensac, [Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
Adam de Cretinge (Creeting)
John de Breotayne
Robert Tybotot, chief executor of Adam de Cretinge
Roger de Thornton
Adam de Osgotby (Osgodby).
Note
The petition is dated to? c. 1315 in accordance with the dating given in the guard note. This is based on a reference to the petition being sent to Adam de Osgodby in one of the responses which presumably relates to Osgodby's temporary tenure of the office of keeper of the great seal in 1315, a time after the death of Cretinge and Thornton (cf. Tout, Chapters in the Admin. History of Medieval England, vol. VI (1933), pp.7-8). There are two other petitions possibly by the same petitioner. If the identification of the petitioner as the same individual in all three cases is correct, then there is a misdating apparent in one or more of the petitions [cf. dating of SC 8/329/E905 and 6].
