Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/177/8834
Date
[c. 1316]
Description
Petitioners
Nicholas de Staveleye (Staveley), clerk.
Name(s)
de Staveleye (Staveley), Nicholas
Addressees
King.
Occupation
clerk
Nature of request
Staveleye requests that his commission to be clerk of the Bench of Dublin and chirographer of the Bench be renewed as he held the office until the coming of the Scots but came to England for default of sustenance, and in the meantime Mortimer granted it to another.
Nature of endorsement
The king wishes to be appraised of the cause by which the petitioner was ousted, and afterwards he will do what pleases him.
Places mentioned
Dublin, [Ireland]
Wigmore, [Herefordshire]
Scotland.
People mentioned
[Roger] Mortimer of Wigmore.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1316 as it seems likely that Staveleye left for England at this time as the Scots threatened attacks on Dublin in early 1316 and 1317. It is possible that the petition may date to as late as late 1318 when Edward Bruce was finally defeated at Fochart near Dundalk.
