Nature of request
[Petition in 8 parts].1) The burgesses request confirmation under the great seal of their lands and tenements held by charters under the king's seal of Calais.2) They request a quick remedy for the perilous state of the haven, risbank and quay.3) They request remedy on the English coast concerning the passage between Calais and Dover as many make their passage from Dunkirk and elsewhere in Flanders to the king's and their loss.4) They request that the king send to the captain of Calais to do remedy concerning covenants made between people of Calais and those of Dover, as those of Dover do not keep to them and detain great sums of money from them.5) They request that those who hold houses by the king's charter and sell merchandise though they are not burgesses, become burgesses or lose their merchandise.6) The burgesses, soldiers and others request that they are able to use money called motouns of France and of Flanders at such a price that they are able to buy victuals as there is a shortage of money whereby they cannot stay in the town.7) Request concerning abandoned houses in the town, that they be put in ward by ordinance of the bailiff and echevins, and if not claimed by the heir after a year be taken into the king's hand.8) The burgesses request the king's charter placing them under the king's protection, and granting them that they be quit of all tolls and customs in confirmation of a charter of King Philip of France that refers to such privileges granted by kings John, Richard I and Henry II.
Nature of endorsement
[On face].1) Let the captain and treasurer of Calais search their remembrances for charters made before this time, and let this be certified in Chancery, and let the charter be sent to Chancery to be confirmed.2) Let the captain take advisement of this, and let this be certified in Chancery and the amendment be ordained.3) Let it be done that the passage not be held elsewhere other than to Calais.4) The captain is present . . .5) The captain is to charge that they become burgesses or lose their merchandises.6) Advice will have to be taken before a remedy is ordained.7) Let this article be granted so that the king be served . . .8) They are to show their liberties that they have of the king since the town was taken . . .[On dorse, none].
