Nature of request
The prior and convent request letters to the chancellor commanding him to make a commission to sufficient persons to enquire into the matter of the ringing of bells in the town as the ancient custom is that no-one should ring bells either in the morning until the church have rung their bell, or at night when they have rung their curfew, and notwithstanding a letter of the king ordering the mayor and commons to follow the ancient custom [recited], the mayor and commons continued to ring their bells. When the commission has been held and returned into Chancery, they request that the chancellor be commanded to do justice to them.
