Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/175/8730
Date
[c. 1280]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Bourk (Burgh), earl of Ulster.
Name(s)
de Bourk (Burgh), earl of Ulster, Richard
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Bourk requests that the justice, treasurer and chancellor of Ireland be ordered to enquire as to whether writs ought to be directed to him or his steward, or to the sheriff of Dublin, as in the time of Lacy and Bourk's father it was the former, but more recently while the earl was a ward of the king, the latter has become the custom: to the earl's prejudice and to no advantage of the king.
Nature of endorsement
The transcript of the petition is to be sent to the justice and chancellor of Ireland, and they should view the charters that the earl has of those lands, and afterwards let an inquisition be held, and let it be sent into England before the council.
Places mentioned
Dublin, [County Dublin, Ireland]
Ireland.
People mentioned
Walter de Bourk (Burgh), earl of Ulster and father of the petitioner
Hugh de Lacy.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1280 as the earl was a ward of the king until 1280, and his father died in 1271. It would seem that the custom complained of by the earl came in during the earl's minority from 1271-80, and it seems unlikely that the earl would not attempt to recover his rights at the earliest opportunity.
