Nature of request
[Petition in 5 parts].1) It is requested that members of the council be assigned to enquire into the perils and troubles and the other reasons why Pieres did not dare to come to receive the charges of the office that you assigned to him, until sufficient remedies are ordained upon the perils and troubles and especially in the parts touching Scotland and Gascony, as he has been assigned proctor and defender of your right and your subjects in those parts.2) To enquire of the defences and remedies ordained by the king's grandfather and his councillors by which he and his . . . were defended from the worst part of the perils.3) To enquire of the reasons for which the defences of the king's father were delayed whereof Scotland and lands in Gascony, the Agenais and Saintonge were lost.4) They request that these remedies be considered before the king answers the pope and the king of France or enters into treaties.5) To survey the reasons why Ellis de Joneston was of no power, and to ordain someone in his place until the coming of Pieres.
