Reference
SC 8/173/8638
Date
[1332]
Description
Petitioners
Joan de Mortemer (Mortimer), widow of Roger de Mortimer, late Earl of March.
Name(s)
de Mortemer (Mortimer), Joan
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Mortemer requests that the king will have regard for the fact that she recovered her liberty of Trim by reversal of a judgment, restoring her to the estate that her and her ancestors had enjoyed prior to the suit of Edward II. Edward II had sued against her and her late husband while they were in prison that the liberty should be forfeit and the judgment had found them forfeit and the liberty was taken into the king's hand. In the first year of Edward III the liberty was restored by the king's grant and subsequently the judgment was reversed. Now the liberty has again been taken into the king's hand because all grants made before the king came to full power have been repealed. She further requests that the letters that her late husband took from the king to the prejudice of her right be annulled for all days.
Nature of endorsement
She should give security in Chancery and show there the letters, exemplifications, annulments and the record and process mentioned in the petition, and let her be fully restored to her liberties according to the tenor of the annulment notwithstanding the letters of gift of which this petition makes mention, which letters should be restored and annulled according to the request of the petition.
Places mentioned
Drogheda, [Ireland]
Trim, [County Meath, Ireland].
People mentioned
Roger de Mortemer (Mortimer), earl of March, late husband of the petitioner
Edward II, King of England
Geoffrey Lescrop (Scrope), then chief justice
Anthony de Lucy, justice of Ireland.
Note
The petition dates to 1332 as it clearly follows the fall of Roger de Mortimer in late 1330, and two successive justices of Ireland were ordered to restore the petitioner to the lordship of Trim in September and October 1332 (CCR 1330-3, pp.489, 503).
