Description

Nature of request
[Petition in 3 parts].1) The burgesses request that their charters of liberties be ratified as they have suffered great hardships after the conquest.2) The burgesses request the grant of a warrant to the treasurer of Calais as they have been to England to buy cloth and wool and paid the custom there, but the treasurer refuses to allow them to return to Calais without paying a new custom though they be free of customs.3) The burgesses request the grant of letters patent of warrant that men at arms and archers are not to enter their houses and lodge there without making covenants with the possessor, and paying a reasonable sum for their lodging after the king has paid them their wages. Troops have lodged with them, but they are still constrained to pay their rents and other services to the king, and to repair their houses.
