Date

Description
Petitioners
Clergy of the bishopric of Durham, of the counties of Northumberland, Westmorland and Cumberland, the archdeaconries of Richmond, Cleveland, York and the East Riding.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The clergy requests remedy as the Scottish war has devastated their goods and they are so impoverished that they are unable to fulfil their function, and although they are willing to pay the tenth, they are only willing to pay it at the true current value of their benefice. Despite this the collectors are compelling them to pay it at the ancient assessment which the clergy sued a petition to the king and council at Nottingham whereby Sovereyn was ordered to refrain from levying the tenth on their benefices until the present parliament.1)
Nature of endorsement
Sovereyn is to be commanded to come before the council for this reason.2) Sovereyn came before them in parliament, and because the king has granted that the clergy pay only a moiety of the tenth reserved for his use according to the new assessment, Sovereyn is to write to the pope to obtain his consent in this matter, and he should not levy anything from the benefices except according to the new assessment until he has been certified on this by the pope. Let Soveryen have letters to levy the tax in this form.
