Nature of request
A remedy is requested as formerly in London bakers who broke the assize of bread were punished by being drawn through the 4 streets of the city on a hurdle, but now those attainted of breaking the assise get their servant [garson] to take the penance in their place so that they are not punished and are considered one of the greater bakers for this, and this is suffered by the mayor and bailiffs for a great redemption.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the mayor, alderman and sheriffs of London that they keep under pain of forfeiture the statute and provisions made by the king's father for the punishment of bakers, so that the greater bakers sustain their penance.
