Reference
SC 8/171/8548
Date
[? 1379]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas Brantingham, Bishop of Exeter.
Name(s)
Brantingham, Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Bishop of Exeter
Nature of request
Brantingham requests that the chancellor be commanded to bring the inquisition taken into his rights to the patronage of Plympton priory into parliament and that justice be done to him. The priory was wrongfully taken into the king's grandfather's hand and the petitioner petitioned for restitution at the last parliament.
Nature of endorsement
Let the petition and inquisition be brought into parliament by commandment of the lords, and let it be sent into Chancery, and let the justices and sergeants of the king and any others who ought to be called be called, and let the inquisition and record be viewed concerning the priory of Plympton, and let the arguments for the king and bishop be heard, and let justice be done according to the law and custom of the realm.
Places mentioned
Plympton, [Devon].
People mentioned
John Granson (Grandisson), Bishop of Exeter.
Note
The petition is dated to? 1379 as it seems likely that two entries in the close rolls for the justices to proceed to judgment relate to this petition (CCR 1377-81, pp.274, 282).
