SC 8/171/8547
Date
[c. 1379]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas Brantingham, Bishop of Exeter.
Name(s)
Brantingham, Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Bishop of Exeter
Nature of request
Brantingham requests remedy as Henry I granted the church of Plumpton to William, bishop of Exeter in perpetuity, and Brantingham's successors enjoyed rights of patronage in the church including providing the licence for the election of the prior, and of instituting them, and this was held until a dispute arose between the late king and the then prior whereby Bishop Grandisson was removed from the patronage, and the temporalities seized into the late king's hand. The prior was removed as an intruder and a new prior elected with the king's licence, the office now being vacant by that prior's death.1)
Nature of endorsement
Copy of a charter of Henry I to William, bishop of Exeter granting the churches of Plympton and elsewhere in perpetuity.2) Because the bishop was not a party to the earlier process it is agreed that a commission is sent to good men to enquire of this and certify in Chancery namely Beaumont, Brankescombe and Kendale.

Note
The related documentation in the patent rolls and court records date this petition to c. 1379 (CPR 1377-81, p.250; KB 27/472, Rex roll 20; C 44/10/2). An entry in the close rolls probably made to SC 8/171/8548 suggests that that petition and this are contemporary or near contemporaries (CCR 1377-81, p.274).
