Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/171/8544
Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Margaret, countess of Kent.
Name(s)
countess of Kent, Margaret
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The countess requests that for the troubles and pains that she has suffered, and for the young age of her son that she be granted his keeping and the keeping of his lands.
Nature of endorsement
The petition is to be given to Richard de Bury so that the king can say his will.
People mentioned
Edmund, son of the petitioner
Richard de Bury.
Note
The petition dates to c. 1331 on the basis of the patent roll grant of all of the late earl of Kent's goods to his widow and her co-executors on 14 February 1331 (CPR 1330-4, p.73). However, this grant, though used for dating purposes in the guard note, does not seem to be in response to the petition which is asking for something entirely different. The petition is still likely to date closely to 1331, as it is unlikely that the countess would have waited for long after the fall of Mortimer to try and recover control of her son and her late husband's lands.
