Reference
SC 8/171/8520
Date
[c. 1318]
Description
Petitioners
People of the commonalty of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people request the king's aid as they have kept the town at their own costs since the beginning of the Scottish war, building the defences of the city, and guarding the city, and because the surrounding country is devastated by the war neither the merchants or craftsmen have anything to live on.
Nature of endorsement
It pleases the king and council that they should have pardon of the farm of the town for two years just as the earl of Pembroke announced on the king's part, and was written in the rolls of parliament.
Places mentioned
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland].
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1318 as the respite and acquittal of sums owed for the farm of the town probably stem from this request (CCR 1313-18, p.414; CCR 1318-23, p.38).
