Reference
SC 8/171/8519
Date
[1333-1334]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Shrewsbury.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent request that they not be put in such oppression and charge against law and right as the king has sent to them Murymouth to receive a pension until they find a benefice for him that he wishes to accept, and he has sent Rider to them for his sustenance for his life. This is a new custom and regard should be had that they are not a royal foundation except by escheat of the earl of Salisbury.
Nature of endorsement
The king wishes to charge their abbey to show the tenor of their charters of foundation and have their defence by the law ordained in this case.
Places mentioned
Shrewsbury, [Shropshire].
People mentioned
Richard Murymouth (Murimuth)
John le Ridere (Rider)
[Robert de Bellême], earl of Shrewsbury.
Note
The petition dates to 1333-1334 as the petition refers to the sending of Rider and Murimouth to the abbey of Shrewsbury for their maintenance, Rider being sent in August in 1331, and Murimouth being sent in May 1333, so that the petition must post-date Murimouth being sent to the abbey (CCR 1330-3, p.334; CCR 1333-7, p.119). In addition, in the close roll entry in which Murimouth is sent to Shrewsbury, it is made clear that he is being sent in return for the abbot's new creation, and the last abbot was dead by April 1333, and the new abbot, Adam de Clebury was in office by June 1333 (CPR 1330-4, pp.424, 437). The petition evidently was successful as Murimouth was sent to Westminster in July 1334, so that the petition cannot have been later than that (CCR 1333-7, p.320). Murimouth seems to have been very unlucky in the provision of his maintenance as prior to his dispatch to Shrewsbury he had been sent to Osney, and after the successful petition by the abbot and convent of Shrewsbury, Murimouth was sent to Westminster and Merton in 1334 and 1335 (CCR 1333-7, pp.320, 489).
