Description
Petitioners
William Ponte of London.
Name(s)
Ponte, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ponte requests that he can have the arrears of the farm from land in Charing in the parish of St Margaret, Westminster, that he leased to Beche, but which has not been paid as Despenser had Beche imprisoned, and the escheator leased it to Langton who has wasted it to the petitioner's great damage; Ponte also requests that the king's hand be removed from the land.
Nature of endorsement
Let faithful people be assigned in Chancery to enquire of the contents of this petition and when it has been returned into Chancery, let justice be done.
Places mentioned
Cherringge (Charing Cross), [Middlesex]
St Margaret, Westminster, [Middlesex].
People mentioned
John del Beche
Hugh le Despenser, the son
John de Langeton.
Note
The petition dates to c. 1327 as it is likely that the petition is one of those presented at the accession of Edward III, and as the petition refers to 6 years arrears of the farm, thus placing the original Despenser involvement to 1321-2.
