Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/171/8504
Date
[c. 1378]
Description
Petitioners
Commonalty of the town of Melcombe Regis.
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
The commonalty request a writ to the collectors of the fifteenth in Dorset to supersede the levying of the fifteenth because the town has been destroyed by the enemy and they have insufficient goods remaining to pay it.
Nature of endorsement
They should have a writ of supersedeas of the levying of the fifteenth until to Michaelmas next coming.
Places mentioned
Melcombe Regis, [Dorset]
Dorset.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1378 as the petitioners had the levying of the 10th and 15th stayed on 12 December 1378, and mention is made of the destruction of the town by the enemy (CCR 1377-81, p.223). However there are other near contemporary petitions by petitioners from Melcombe, and it is probably that the close roll entry is not in response to this petition as it states that it was 'upon petition of the mayor and commonalty of Melcombe'.
