Nature of request
[Petition in 3 parts:]1) It is requested that 3 proctors be able to be sent to sue to the king of France that the seneschal not be distrained to make execution of the arrest ordered on the people of Southampton in his lands against the ancient rights and liberties of the king in his lordship, the order being made until satisfaction is made to Cansade.2) It is requested that people of the council are assigned to view the requests and answers made to the king of France by the messengers and proctors of the king's grandfather to put the king of France in default . . .and the award of the pronunciation of Pope Boniface and of other matters done to inform the proctors in their requests and responses.3) It is requested that the clerk assigned to the office of Philip Martel lately present to defend the king's grandfather be joined to the proctors in the suit of the business.

The petition has been somewhat speculatively dated to? 1327-? 1340 as seems likely that the references to the actions of the king's grandfather refer back to the time of Edward I, and this petition dates to early Edward III before Edward III assumed the title of king of France.
