Date

Description
Petitioners
Rees ap Gruffudd ap Lloyd ap Iouan, tenant of the county of Cardigan.
Name(s)
ap Gruffudd ap Lloyd ap Iouan, Rees
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Rees ap Gruffudd requests mitigation and pardon of £80 the remaining sum of a debt he owes for which he has otherwise made satisfaction and has sold all his goods and chattels and mortgaged his land so that he has nothing to live on. He owed £36 from the time he was escheator of Cardiganshire, which sum he could not collect, and was subsequently maliciously indicted and imprisoned, and was forced to make a fine with the earl of Arundel to obtain release though he was not guilty.
Nature of endorsement
Let one safe-conduct be made for William de la Fous Secretary of the king, and Hanart de Campbernart his usher of arms . . . to come and reside in England . . . to pass to Ireland to the presence of the king to show certain matters concerning his cousin of France to last until the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist.
Places mentioned
Cardiganshire, [Wales]
South Wales.
People mentioned
[Richard Fitzalan], earl of Arundel
William de la Fous, secretary of the king
Hanart de Campbernart, usher of arms.
Note
Rees, Petitions Relating to Wales, dates the petition to c. 1377 apparently on firm grounds. However, the endorsement, though unconnected to the petition, may suggest a later date, perhaps 1394/5 or 1399 when Richard II was in Ireland.
