Date
[c. 1318]
Description
Petitioners
Walter Stapledon, bishop of Exeter.
Name(s)
Stapledon, Walter
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
bishop of Exeter
Nature of request
Stapledon requests remedy as he has full rights of ordinary jurisdiction of the parish and church of St Buryan, but Manton by a false allegation during the time of the king's father procured a grant of the office of dean without the then bishop's presentation, and the king has presented twice since then and the church is considered a royal free chapel though it has never been one. The bishop has been attached to answer on his claims, and the cure of souls is being neglected in the meantime.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
St Buryan, Cornwall.
People mentioned
Ralph de Manton, late dean of St Buryan
Matthew Boilleau, late dean of St Buryan
John de Maunces, dean of St Buryan.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1318 as Matthew de Boilleau who is noted as having resigned as dean in the petition was replaced as dean in 1319, and the dating of another related petition suggests this date (CPR 1317-21, p.380; Docs. Illus. English History, p.42).
