Reference
SC 8/169/8440
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Bousser; Margaret de Bousser, wife of Robert de Bousser.
Name(s)
de Bousser; de Bousser, Robert; Margaret
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Boussers request remedy as Philip and Ellen Basset held the manor of North Weald Basset from Hugh de Essex for their lives, and after their death Despenser entered the manor and gave it to his son, and after his forfeiture it came into the king's hand, though the manor should have reverted to the petitioners after the death of the Bassets.
Nature of endorsement
Let the fine be shown in Chancery, and there let certain people be assigned to enquire in the presence of the keeper if Hugh le Despenser the elder entered into the tenements after the death as the petition alleges and whether he continued his seisin until he enfeoffed his son, and if Margaret Bousser is the next heir of Hugh de Essex in tail, and of other things touching it. And let the muniments of the Despensers be searched to find anything that would bar the petitioners. And when the inquisition and certification has been returned into Chancery, let the king be advised.
Places mentioned
North Weald Basset, Essex.
People mentioned
Philip Basset
Ellen [Basset], wife of Philip Basset
Hugh [de Essex] son of Hugh de Essex
Anne [de Essex], daughter of Hugh Fitz Hugh de Essex, mother of Margaret [de Essex]
Hugh le Despenser, the son..
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1327 as it seems to date to the beginning of Edward III and complains of the actions of the Despensers. It is possible that it predates the grant of the manor by the king to his uncle the earl of Kent on 27 February 1327, as the petition makes no mention of the grant, which would have so greatly complicated the petitioner's request (CChR 1327-41, p.2).
