Reference
SC 8/169/8410
Date
[1307]
Description
Petitioners
Margaret de Multon, widow of Hubert de Multon.
Name(s)
de Multon, Margaret
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Multon requests that no seisin be delivered to William le Brun, and that the chancellor be warned that he should not deliver any seisin without warning Multon to show what she knows concerning the estate of the king and the heir of Hubert de Multon as the heir is under age and in the king's wardship. John de Multon the son and heir of Hubert de Multon and the petitioner is only 13 years of age and is in the king's keeping, but William le Brun, a bastard son of Multon by his cousin Ada, is claiming seisin of Hubert's lands and tenements in deceipt of the king.
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be sent to the chancellor, and let it be enjoined to him that he is not to admit the heir apparent without a special order of the king.
Places mentioned
Gilsland, [Cumberland].
People mentioned
Hubert de Multon, late husband of the petitioner
John [de Multon], son and heir of Hubert de Multon
Thomas de Multon of Gilsland
William le Brun (Brown), bastard son of Hubert de Multon and Ada le Brun
Ada le Brun, mother of William le Brun.
Note
The petition is dated to 1307 on the basis of the presence of a Latin translation of this petition on the parliament roll for the parliament held at Carlisle in Hillary 1307 (Rot. Parl. Vol. I, p.195a; PROME, Vetus Codex 1307, appendix, no.37). This matches well with the conjectured date for the petition based on the inquisition post mortem of Hubert de Multon where his bastard son is given as 14 in July 1300, he being only able to claim his alleged inheritance c. 1307 (CIPM, vol. III, no.594).
