Reference
SC 8/168/8379
Date
[c. 1350-c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Elliot Irvoys, esquire.
Name(s)
Irvoys, Elliot
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Guyenne, [France]
Coforto [unidentified], [Gascony, France].
Nature of request
Elliot Irvoys states that he and his brother have loyally served the king in his wars in Gascony, as a result of which they have lost all their lands, and have twice been prisoners of the French. His brother is again a prisoner, and in recognition of their service he therefore requests the king's assistance in freeing him from prison, and also that he be granted the bailiwick of Coforto, which is in the hands of the enemy.
Nature of endorsement
.
Note
Dated to the latter part of the reign of Edward III predominantly on the basis of the handwriting. It may date from slightly later, but the statement that the petitioner had served the king in his wars, rather than the king and his grandfather, would suggest the reign of Edward III rather than Richard II.
