Reference
SC 8/168/8352
Date
[? c. 1318]
Description
Petitioners
John Paynel.
Name(s)
Paynel, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John Paynel requests compensation for wastes and destructions done to his lands while he was a ward of the king.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that the heirs ought to have remedy in this case. Therefore order the justices that they and the clerks of chancery should ordain remedy as they see fit. After the petition was delivered the justices called the king's servants and others before them, and they agreed in this manner.Order the Treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to summon before them those who had custody of John's lands by the king's commission, and the king's ministers, and do justice with regard to wastes committed in this time. Before the great council [deleted].
Note
A note on the guard suggests a date of 1318, with reference to a proof of age dated 25 January 1319 and inquisitions post mortem for the same man held between May and August 1325. The handwriting, the Latin endorsement and the fact that he left two young daughters as heirs suggest that the petition may relate to this man, but no definitive link is possible.
