Description
Petitioners
John van Loo, merchant of Germany.
Name(s)
van Loo, John
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
merchant of Germany
Nature of request
John van Loo requests that orders be issued enforcing payment to him for 72 barrels of cinders which he sold to Brandon. He states that the cinders were handed over to Brandon's servant, Fery, on given terms, but Brandon then failed to pay. When the case was heard before the mayor and constables of the Staple, Brandon claimed that Fery was not his servant, and he should not be responsible for payment, but an appeal before the chancellor has established the truth of the claim.
Nature of endorsement
Let the record and process made in the Staple be brought into Chancery and examined, and if errors or default are found then let redress be granted by the chancellor and others of the council according to reason.
Places mentioned
Alemaigne (Germany)
London.
People mentioned
Thomas de Brandon
John de Fery, servant of Thomas de Brandon
William de Brokesbourn, broker
Henry de Crombek, merchant of Germany.
Note
The petition refers to the sale being agreed on 7 October 1356, with payments due on 28 October and 20 November 1356. The hearings before the officials of the Staple and the Chancellor then occurred after that date, suggesting that the petition was probably presented in 1357 or shortly thereafter.
