Date
[c. 1321]
Description
Petitioners
John de Gisors, former mayor of London.
Name(s)
de Gisors, John
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
mayor of London
Nature of request
John de Gisors, formerly mayor of London, requests the examination of the rolls of the coroner of London, and the correction of any errors relating to the case against him. He states that Walmar, Brandeston and Ripoun were accused of involvement in the death of Broun before Staunton in his hearings at the Tower of London. After the officials of Lincoln had certified that Walmar had been taken there on another matter and died in prison, Gisors was then accused of admitting Brandeston to the freedom of the city and granting him bail after the felony had taken place. He has since been committed to prison for 17 days, forced to pay a large fine, and the mayoralty has been suspended.
Nature of endorsement
Issue a writ of chancery to bring the record before the king.
Places mentioned
London
Lapworth, [Warwickshire]
Lincoln, [Lincolnshire].

Edmund Walmar of London
coroner of London
Robert de Broun of Lapworth
Henry de Brandeston
Cecily de Ripoun
sheriff of Lincolnshire
coroner of Lincolnshire
Henry Lescrop, justice of King's Bench.
Note
This petition clearly relates to the events surrounding the conviction of Gisors by the 1321 London eyre of knowingly admitting a felon to the freedom of the city, charges which helped precipitate the suspension of the London mayoralty, part of Edward II's attempt to seize control of London. It clearly dates from after the eyre itself, probably either later in 1321 or 1322.
