Description

Addressees
Council.
Occupation
merchants of York and Hull
Nature of request
The petitioners complain that they were attacked at sea by men from France and Scotland, who stole goods from them worth £1000. They sued for redress to the ambassadors meeting at Leulinghem, who agreed that, if they could prove their case, they would receive compensation. Skottishburgh appeared and swore that the attack was made by Frenchmen and Scots, but then claimed that it was only the fault of the Scots, and the case was adjourned until the next gathering. The petitioners therefore request that the sheriffs of York be ordered to bring Skottishburgh before the council to examine the truth of this matter.
Nature of endorsement
On 3 October, 4 [Henry IV], it was agreed by the council, comprising the Chancellor, Treasurer, Keeper of the Privy Seal, Lord Say, Scarle, Sturmy and Frome, that a writ be sent to the sheriffs of York to summon John Skottisshburgh into their keeping, and to have him before the council at Westminster in three weeks of Michaelmas next, to be examined upon these matters.
