Description

Name(s)
Vanne, Peter
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
Peter Vanne, son and executor of John Vanne, merchant of the Ballardi of Lucca, requests that the king order the payment of sums outstanding on a debt of £3471 16s 11d owed to his father and his colleagues by the king's father, and for which he is being distrained by the sheriffs of London at the suit of his father's colleagues.
Nature of endorsement
Order the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to view the bill, and to search the rolls and memoranda of the Exchequer concerning the sums already paid, and if they find that the sums have been paid and assigned as the petition states, and that the sums are being demanded of the executor for this reason and no other, then grant Peter due allowance of the requested sums.
Places mentioned

London.
People mentioned
John Vanne, merchant of the Ballardi of Lucca, father of the petitioner
sheriffs of London.
Note
The handwriting of both this petition and the associated petition at SC 8/167/8341 would suggest a date in the middle of the fourteenth century. John Vanne was a receiver of the wine customs at Bordeaux in the latter years of Edward I (E 101/159/9), and inquisitions into his property were held in 1316, suggesting that he had either died by then or had suffered forfeiture (C 47/25/2/28-9). However, a writ to Sandwich regarding the re-payment of a debt owed to John was issued in 1360 (E 122/228/67B), and may relate to the matter contained in these petitions.
