Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Barton.
Name(s)
de Barton, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
[Cumberland]
[Westmorland].
Nature of request
[This petition is incomplete, but the details can be reconstructed from the duplicate.] Robert de Barton states that [the king's father] appointed him with others as a justice to take assizes [in Cumberland and Westmorland] for seven years during time of war, and granted him 40 marks for his expenses, [sending him his writ of liberate to the Treasurer and Chamberlains] to deliver this to him: but they would not do this without a letter of the privy seal, which Robert could never get. He requests that the king and council order [the Treasurer and Chamberlains] to deliver the money to him, according to the form [of the writ of liberate, [or to allow it to him in debts he owes the king elsewhere].
Nature of endorsement
Send a chancery writ to the Treasurer, barons and chamberlains of the Exchequer that they view the writs of liberate mentioned in this petition (which show that the king's father was bound in the sums mentioned), and that they allow these against debts owed to the king by the petitioner.
Note
The duplicate petition is dated to? c. 1327 on the basis of the handwriting, the French endorsement, and that the subject matter is likely to be related to the beginning of a new reign. The tenor of the different endorsements suggests that it dates to shortly after the duplicate at SC 8/31/1544
