Reference
SC 8/167/8302
Date
[c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Henry de Ferrers.
Name(s)
de Ferrers, Henry
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
Henry de Ferrers requests that he be restored to the manors of Princes Risborough and Newport. Edward III granted Princes Risborough to Henry's grandfather, as well as the remainder of Newport, held in dower by Margaret de Clare, and Henry held them until his death. They were then taken into the king's hands during the minority of William, and were granted to Prince Edward. However, they were not returned to William on his majority, despite petitions to Prince Edward, and the petitioner now requests that the king view the records and make restoration.
Nature of endorsement
Let this bill be sent to the chancery, and there call the king's sergeants and others and the records touching this matter, and let right be done by the advice of the great council both for the king and the parties.
Places mentioned
Earls Risborough (Princes Risborough), Buckinghamshire
Newport, Essex.
People mentioned
William de Ferrers, father of the petitioner
Henry de Ferrers of Groby, grandfather of the petitioner
Edward III, King of England
Margaret [de Clare], wife of Piers Gaveston
Piers Gaveston
[Edward of Woodstock], Prince [of Wales].
Note
From the references to the king's father and grandfather, the petition clearly dates to the reign of Richard II, and probably to the early part of the reign.
