de Bodenho, John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
chaplain
Nature of request
Bodenho states that the men of Bedford granted him for the term of his life the keeping of the town's bridge with the oratory on it, which he peacefully possessed for a long time until Derby led the King to believe that the oratory was his free chapel and asked the King for its collation and removed the petitioner from its keeping without judgment or process of law. The petitioner then brought an assize of novel disseisin against Derby before Cambridge and his companions, and Derby showed them the King's collation asking them not to proceed with the assize. The petitioner then presented a petition in parliament at York with the response that they should proceed with the assize and do justice, notwithstanding the King's collation. Then the King granted the collation to Abbirbury who put his collation before Shardelowe and his companions asking them to surcease. The petitioner requests a writ to the justices that they inquire into the King's right at their session, and if they find that the King has no right, they should proceed to take the assize and return judgement, notwithstanding the collation or writs of the targe (privy seal).
Nature of endorsement
Because he previously had a writ to Shardelowe and his companions to proceed with the assize and to do justice, the said justices should again be ordered to proceed with this assize and do justice, notwithstanding the aforesaid allegation and collation.
