Description
Petitioners
Alexander de Bergh.
Name(s)
de Bergh, Alexander
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Bergh states that Wauwayn and Barde had the keeping of the town and castle of Scarborough for £120 yearly at the Exchequer, until Wauwayn went to Portchester, and by alliance with Despenser and Clif, so that Despenser might have the petitioner's manor of Hatterboard Hill, ousted Barde and obtained a commission in the petitioner's name of the keeping of the castle and town of Scarborough for £120 yearly, which he knew nothing about, and Wauwayn kept the commission in his possession long afterwards, and levied a great sum of money from the issues after the date of the commission, and then delivered the commission to the petitioner. The treasurer and barons intend to charge the petitioner in his account with the issues received by Wauwayn after the date of the commission. The petitioner therefore request that they have consideration for the damages which he sustained from the Scots and of Wauwayn's poverty, and that the debts which he and Wauwayn owe for the farm and for victuals delivered to them in the late king's time be postponed.
Nature of endorsement
Since Wauwayn has testified before the council that he purchased such a commission in the absence of Bergh, and in regard for Bergh's losses, his petition is granted and the debt installed at £10 yearly.
