Description
Petitioners
John de Crumbewell (Cromwell), keeper of the forest north of Trent.
Name(s)
de Crumbewell (Cromwell), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Crumbewell states that whereas various men, including religious, having lands in the forests of his jurisdiction, customarily find puture for the foresters and other officers of the forests as well as for the keepers, lately the King, intending that such putures should cease, ordered Crumbewell to use such diligence to maintain his said putures and others rights that the King should not be disinherited, nor his officers harmed, in his default. And recently at the suit of some men who claim to hold their lands by the charter of kings in free alms, it was confirmed with the clause 'licet' that such lands were exempted, which have always been charged of such putures, so that writs were made to the petitioner that he should stop demanding such putures for him and the said foresters and officers. Crumbewell requests that the King order what Crumbewell should do in this matter, because if such putures should cease the King will have to ordain for the sustenance of his said officers, or the said forests will have no keepers.
Nature of endorsement
The King will be advised of this right.
