Description
Petitioners
Roger de Lue; Joan de Lue, wife of Roger de Lue.
Name(s)
de Lue; de Lue, Roger; Joan
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Roger and Joan de Lue request that: 1) the King deliver to them the crossing of the Tweed to Berwick as Joan's inheritance, to hold according to the form of the charters of his ancestors, as they have a duty to find an armed man ready in the aforesaid manner. Edward I formerly gave the crossing to Hayward, whose heir Joan is, by charter for his good service, to have and to hold to him and his heirs until a bridge between Berwick and Tweedmouth was sufficiently repaired so that men on foot, on horse, in carts or with loads might pass there safely: and Hayward had no other reward for his long service, and by virtue of the said charter and its confirmation by Edward I, they were peacefully seised of this crossing, to take its profits, until they were ejected by Brus when he took the town of Berwick by force and treason. And to aid the King and Bailliol to recover their lands, Roger found an armed horseman at his own expense to follow and challenge his right from the beginning to the end.2) a grant of their seisin of certain burgages in Hudgate or the rent of 7 marks yearly, which Hayward had from Edward I to him and his heirs, as Joan's inheritance, and of which they had peaceful seisin until Brus took the town by force and treason, since they found an armed man at their own expense to aid the King from beginning to end when he entered Scotland with armed men.
Nature of endorsement
This petition should be sent to Chancery and their charters and muniments of the crossing and tenements contained in the petition viewed there, and when the chancellor is informed he should advise the King and the King will order his will.
