Description

Nature of request
The citizens of York request that the king grant that the Rivers Ouse and Ure not be put 'in defence' between the city and Boroughbridge. They cite clauses in Magna Carta against rivers being put in defence. However Richard, earl of Cornwall and Edmund his son had placed the rivers in defence. The mayor and commonalty had proved their franchise by the great assize of 26 knights, and they were seised of their franchise for 2 years, but after this Earl Edmund disseised them of it to the great damage of the city.
