Reference
SC 8/165/8202
Date
[? 1316-? 1344]
Description
Petitioners
David ap Bleddyn, bishop of St Asaph.
Name(s)
ap Bleddyn, David
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
bishop of St Asaph
Nature of request
David, bishop of St Asaph requests remedy against temporal lords in Wales who seize and claim for themselves the goods of any of their tenants dying intestate as if the goods were their own. And when it is evident, by the certification of the bishop or other ordinary, that the deceased people had written their wills correctly and lawfully, the bailiffs pretend that the same had died intestate and so seize and usurp their goods to the lords' use.
Nature of endorsement
Let the Earl of Chester be ordered by the King's writ that he not permit his bailiffs to intermeddle with the goods of people dying in the said diocese, if they can ascertain that these people made their wills in due form.
People mentioned
Earl of Chester.
Note
Dated on guard to? 1316-? 1344 presumably because David ap Bleddyn was bishop of St Asaph from 1315 until his death in 1346. Rees, Petitions Relating to Wales, p. 278, gives a date of 1334, although he does not explain why. The right of the bishops of St Asaph to claim free administration of the goods of intestates was confirmed in 1330 (CPR 1327-30, p. 474), so the petition probably dates from after this.
