Nature of request
From time of memory the abbot and convent of Faversham have held the manor of Tring with the advowson of its church. In the thirteenth year of Edward I [1284] the then prior of New Romney brought his writ of right of the same advowson against the abbot of Faversham before the justices of the King's Bench. This process continued until Easter in the 15th year of Edward I [1287] when the matter was adjourned, during which time the prior of New Romney had granted Queen Eleanor various manors and the advowson of the church of Tring, notwithstanding the aforesaid grant. The prior pursued the writ against the abbot until the grand assize decided that the abbot had more right in his tenancy than the prior, and final judgement was returned. The King then sued a quare impedit against the abbot of the said advowson, which pleas were pending until the 30th year of his reign [1302] when the abbot granted the King the presentment of the church and granted the advowson of the church of Tring to be the King's right and quitclaimed the advowson to him forever. The bishop of Lincoln then came to court and said that the said church was fully of the collation of the abbot of Faversham of Ince. The abbot and convent request that the king and council have regard for their right to the advowson of Tring, and that the abbot never should have agreed to his recognizance, and that the prior of New Romney's grant should not have been made to Queen Eleanor. They request that the said process and record be examined and the advowson restored to them.
Nature of endorsement
The king has right of inheritance and the council does not wish to remove it.
