Nature of request
When Gilbert and Isabel Melton brought suit against John [...], Verde and Reading, executors of the will of Ashburnham, for 500 marks which the deceased owed to Isabel, they retained Bold as their counsel for which he was to receive 9 marks, and for the great trust which they had in Bold to pursue their case they bound themselves to Bold in £40 by a simple bond of such purport that if Gilbert could recover the 500 marks from the executors himself the bond would be void. Notwithstanding the great trust which the petitioners had in Bold, against good faith and conscience he was retained as counsel by the executors against the petitioners, for which deceit and injury the petitioners at diverse times have come to Bold and asked him to return the bond of £40, which he wrongly kept and will not return. He has also received £20 from the executors for being their counsel in this case. The petitioners request that the council consider Bold's great deceit in this case and that he be charged to answer in this matter and to return the bond for £40 to the petitioners.
